The sun is not yellow or white, it is green

Color is what we see when wavelengths of sunlight are perceived by the human eye. In this case, if a prism is used to separate the light emitted by the sun, all the colors of the rainbow will appear: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, which are actually different wavelengths emitted by the sun. Why do we see the sun yellow?

The longest wavelength is red, followed by orange, yellow and green before violet, which has the shortest wavelength. Only the shorter-wavelength colors (blue, green, and purple) of the sun’s white light will reach the planet’s surface when it enters the atmosphere and collides with its constituent particles. As a result, occasionally the sun’s rays have a yellow tint or an orange or red sunset.

It is now clear why we perceive the sun as a yellow, orange or red ball after hearing this explanation. However, it remains an unknown how the sun actually looks from space and what color it actually is.

The color of the sun in space

The color of the sun can usually be determined by the longest wavelength it emits. It corresponds to the green color in this case. It makes sense to think of the sun as a star that is mostly green. However, as already mentioned, the sun also gives off other shades that, when combined, give the white hue. Because the human eye is unable to distinguish between so many shades, it can only perceive the sun from space as a white star.

According to a National Geographic article, «There does seem to be some greater intensity in the emission of the fourth color of the spectrum, green, although it cannot be seen under the human eye, even in space, as the emission continues. Be across the spectrum and the result is still white.
